1. Get a course offer from a licensed sponsor
First, select a suitable course and receive an offer from a provider that is licensed to sponsor students. Confirm the course start date, tuition amount, conditions and any deposit deadline directly with the provider.
2. Receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
Once the provider is satisfied that you have met its conditions, it can assign a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Check that the details match your passport and course documents before using the CAS in your application.
3. Prepare financial and supporting evidence
Applicants may need to show funds for outstanding course fees and living costs, held for the required period. The amount and evidence rules depend on where you will study and your circumstances. Some applicants may also need an ATAS certificate, a tuberculosis test, parental consent, or evidence of English ability.
As of 8 October 2026, GOV.UK lists maintenance funds of £1,529 per month for up to nine months in London and £1,171 outside London. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, the Home Office has announced monthly amounts of £1,570 for London and £1,203 outside London. Check the rule in force on your application date.
4. Submit the application at the right time
For an application from outside the UK, GOV.UK says the earliest application date is six months before the course starts. Follow the live application steps, identity-check instructions, fee information and appointment guidance shown for your case.
5. Keep a copy and follow the decision instructions
Keep copies of the form and documents you submit. Read the decision notice carefully and follow the visa conditions, travel dates and registration instructions that apply to you.
